Cava and H&R Block jump on results while Neurocrine and Performance Food Group slide

The mid-cap earnings tape delivered unusually wide dispersion on Wednesday, with the day's biggest movers separated less by sector than by whether management had good news to pair with the print. TheStreet reported Cava Group up 16% and H&R Block up 12%, while Neurocrine Biosciences fell 6.5% and Performance Food Group dropped 4.5%.
Cava supplied the cleanest beat of the group. The Mediterranean fast-casual chain said revenue reached $365.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, a 31.3% increase over the year-earlier period, according to the company's release. Same-restaurant sales rose 9.0%, and the company attributed 5.3 percentage points of that to guest traffic growth — the metric restaurant investors watch most closely, because it separates genuine demand from menu price increases.
Profitability moved with the top line. Cava reported net income of $23.0 million, up 25.3% year over year, and adjusted EBITDA of $54.7 million, a 30.0% gain. The company opened 17 net new restaurants in the quarter to reach 476 locations, a 19.6% increase in its footprint from a year earlier, and reaffirmed full-year guidance for 75 to 77 net new openings, same-restaurant sales growth of 4.5% to 6.5% and adjusted EBITDA of $181.0 million to $191.0 million.
H&R Block's move was driven as much by the outlook as by the quarter. Coverage from StockStory, published via FinancialContent, put fiscal fourth-quarter revenue at $1.14 billion against a $1.12 billion consensus, up 3% year over year, with adjusted earnings of $2.38 a share versus $2.21 expected and adjusted EBITDA of $420.5 million against a $394.6 million estimate.
The forward numbers did the heavier lifting. StockStory reported fiscal 2027 guidance implying adjusted earnings of $6.14 a share at the midpoint and EBITDA of about $1.13 billion, both above analyst models, with full-year revenue guided to roughly $4.14 billion. Shares traded up 12.2% to $52.38 immediately after the release, against a market capitalization the outlet pegged at $5.82 billion.
On the other side of the ledger, Neurocrine Biosciences fell on a safety story rather than a financial one. Investing.com, citing reporting by STAT News, said clinicians had been alerted to deaths and serious side effects potentially associated with Vykat, the company's Prader-Willi syndrome treatment: seven patients prescribed the drug had died and more than 100 serious adverse events had been filed with the FDA's adverse event monitoring system as of July 31. None of those outcomes have been definitively attributed to the drug.
Chief executive Kyle Gano told Investing.com the company does not see a relationship between the deaths and Vykat XR, while acknowledging that label changes or updated guidance for prescribing physicians remain under consideration. The same report noted Neurocrine simultaneously released Phase 4 data for its tardive dyskinesia drug Ingrezza showing roughly 58% of patients meeting symptomatic remission thresholds at week 24.
Performance Food Group's decline is the most instructive of the four, because the company arguably raised more than it missed. Investing.com reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $18.0 billion against an $18.07 billion estimate and adjusted earnings of $1.59 a share versus $1.60 expected — a rounding error on both lines — alongside full-year net sales of $67.8 billion, up 7.2%, and adjusted EBITDA of $1.9 billion, up 9.2%. Fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of $72.5 billion to $73.0 billion sat well above the $67.92 billion consensus, yet the shares still fell, a reminder that in a market trading near highs, distributors are given little room to miss even by a penny.
